Joseph Charles Poli and Albert Bernabe’s Collection Exhibition

Posted in Events, Fashion Shows, San Francisco, Spotlight: Bay Area with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 7, 2012 by Melissa Roxie

Friday evening, House of Villains had the pleasure of viewing the collections of two of San Francisco’s newest designers; Joseph Charles Poli and Albert Bernabe.  Both are just weeks away from obtaining their BFA’s in Fashion Design and are eager to make the transition from student, to designer. Their design debut was nothing short of fabulous, and went off without a hitch. Dozens of guests arrived at the Bloomingdales Market street location to get a glimpse of the immaculate tailoring and sophisticated taste of these two new talents.  Each had their own collections lining the walls of the personal shopping department where they explained to eager viewers the inspiration, techniques and labor involved in creating each garment.

We were truly impressed with this event, Both Poli and Bernabe handled the stresses of hosting a show like seasoned professionals, and if this is just the beginning, then we can’t wait to see what’s next!

It’s collections like this that we really appreciate, not only are they exceptionally talented designers but they can sew! Every garment in both of these collections was handmade by them and done exquisitely. We are so sick of seeing hot young things that can sketch all day long but don’t know how to thread a needle.  Construction should be just as much of an inspiration as fabric or color and these designers have done an incredible job of demonstrating that.

If you’re as intrigued by these guys as we are, then don’t go too far! We might be interviewing one (or both) of them for our Featured Designer’s page later this month!

In the meantime, feel free to check out their websites….

Be Part of an Eco Fashion Collection: Help Fund!!!

Posted in Spotlight: Bay Area with tags , , , , , , on January 12, 2012 by House of Villains

I am a Senior at Academy of Art University in San Francisco California. I am a sustainable women’s wear designer. I have been chosen to participate in our fashion show in May. My collection is based on geometric patterns, minimal seams, zero waste pattern making, subtraction cutting, transformation and organic fabrics. My collection focuses on low impact manufacturing and domestic sourcing. I am the first sustainable designer in over 2 years to show at our graduation fashion show. Academy of Art is the only school to show during New York fashion week during the fall and spring. The May fashion show is the largest and most professionally produced fashion show in the West Coast. Our guest of honors have included Vivian Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Ducky Brown and much much more

The Impact

Having the collection created will show the fashion industry the importance of sustainable design. It will create an awareness about being eco- conscience. The fashion industry and the community would miss out on the beauty of a collection without waste and low impact manufacturing. It would be sad for myself and my classmates not to see the final product of my innovative concept.

What We Need & What You Get

I need $5500 for material cost. The materials needed to complete the collection would be organic wool, organic cotton jersey and brass trims. 40% of the construction will be sent to professional seamstresses. If the goal is not met the money still gathered will go towards fabric cost. Using only domestic fabrics makes it more expensive but the quality is much better than international sourcing. 20% of my fabric costs is being funded by the fabric company. The highest pledged individual will get to choose a garment from my collection.

Other Ways You Can Help

Share the this project with others and create an awareness about eco fashion.

Sustainability for the New Year: Puma

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on December 29, 2011 by House of Villains

Like the company, PUMA’s Suede shoe has evolved with the times.  The Suede wore well with Star Wars T-shirts and bell bottoms in the 70’s; break dancing and big hair of the 1980s; and the grunge, alternative, and complaint rock scene of the nineties.  With colors in every hue and its wide fat laces, the Suede was a must for the post-boomer generation from morning school classes to the wee hours at nightclubs–and ranks highly with Vans and Reebok aerobics shoes in fashion history.  Now the Suede has been re-birthed with PUMA’s introduction last week of the “Re-Suede,” redesigned with recycled materials.

The Re-Suede is another step in PUMA’s strategy to become a more environmental and socially conscious company while pushing the envelope in cool design.  From issuing an environmental profit and loss statement; to reducing toxins within its product line; to the launch of a shrunken andplant-based plastic bag, PUMA is outpacing its competitors in the sustainability race.  All of these steps are to meet the company’s goals of having half of its collection to be manufactured out of sustainable materials by 2015.

According to PUMA, designers revamped every aspect of the Re-Suede with their environmental impacts in mind.  The upper, sockliner, linings, and even the laces are all made from 100 percentrecycled materials.  Toray Industries created the synthetic suede material, which is made out ofrecycled polyester fibers.  According to Toray, its chemical recycling process slashes energy consumption and carbon emissions by 80 percent compared to similar processes that create suedeout of virgin materials.

The sole will also score points with eco-fashionistas and vegan shoe mavens.  Double R Rice Rubber replaces 10 percent of the rubber content with a rice husk filler, which is a byproduct of the food industry.  The reformulated outsole still has the same durability, slip resistance, and abrasion resistant properties, according to Jones & Vining, the product’s manufacturer.

In addition to performance, PUMA touts the light weight of the Re-Suede.  The shoe is a tad over five ounces (140 grams) lighter than the original, which PUMA says can contribute to a reduction of fifteen tons of carbon emissions for every 1000 pairs shipped.  And finally, the Re-Suede will be available online later this fall and in stores by early 2012, packed in PUMA’s Clever Little Bag that will replace traditional cardboard shoeboxes this fall as well.  From supply chain to manufacturing to transport, the PUMA sets the standard for cool eco-friendly athletic gear.  And, forty years later, they are still cool.
